When we proudly tell someone about the southern Brazil, in USA, usually people most common reaction is the following sentence: “Oh, that’s really something! Seems to be an amazing place for business and an awesome place to live there!”. Next comes a question: “Why did you guys leave?” And right before people jump to conclusion that I might not be telling the truth about it , I get the answer back right away: “It was my personal desire to live abroad and expand our horizons as a family and as an entrepreneur, that led us to move. Simple. And we miss the place for sure!”
Santa Catarina is the smallest southern state in Brazil. It is the 7th smallest state in terms of area in Brazil. And also, it has 3,4% of the Brazilian population. Furthermore, it has the 6th highest GDP (gross domestic product) in Brazil.
Besides the formidable GDP, the HDI (Human Development Index) in Santa Catarina is one of the best in the country. Santa Catarina holds the 3rd place when it concerns HDI in Brazil. This result is a mix of diversified cultural environment and a powerful economy: agrobusiness, metal-mechanic manufacturing, tourism, forestry sector, Tech sector, mining sector and the textile sector.
Also, Santa Catarina is the safest state in Brazil. In 2020, 58,5% of its cities have had zero homicide cases, counted from January, 1st to October 19th!
LOGISTICS
Also, the ports in the state give Santa Catarina the 3rd place as an importer and exporter state. The ANTAQ 2019 yearbook (Agência Nacional dos Transporte s Aquaviários) says that the sum of cargo handling in the South of Brazil is already greater than the one at Santos, São Paulo, the greatest port in Brazil.
AGROBUSINESS
The agrobusiness sector has been held responsible for 72% of the total export in the state. As a result of it , its revenue has reached a number of $2,87bi dollars in the first quarter of 2020.
METAL-MECHANIC SECTOR
The metal-mechanic sector is responsible for a 21% share in the industry sector in Santa Catarina. In 2017, the sector was responsible for 26,7% of the total exports in the State. Santa Catarina is the biggest exporter of hermetic engines in Brazil (77% of the total), as well as the export leader of refrigerators in Brazil. Here in the State, also, there is the home of the biggest independent iron foundry company in Latin America.
One of the two BMW factories existing in Brazil is located in Santa Catarina. Opened in 2014, the factory has been building and assembling BMW cars of their Serie 3, BMW X1, BMW X3 and BMW 4. The annual output capacity is 32.000 cars."

Santa Catarina has received 16,3 mi of tourists in 2019. It means 12% of the gross domestic product came from the tourism business in 2019. Some data even shows that 95% of the companies doing tourist business in the state are considered small companies.

Based on data by FIESC (Federação das Indústrias de Santa Catarina), the latest available number show that the sector is responsible for 5,24% of the industry GDP in the state and 8,43% when it is compared with the overall national performance.

Santa Catarina has been well known for being an innovative state in Brazil. The state holds second place in the country as the most competitive state in Brazil when it concerns innovation. The innovation is easily found inside the organizations, universities, companies and in the daily life of its people.
TECHS
The Tech sector in Santa Catarina is growing fast and it has achieved high standards nationally. On the state government´s website it states that the innovation sector has grown 12% and had a revenue of 17,7 bi of reais (something around $3,2 bi dollars) in 2019 . The result places Santa Catarina as the state that has the highest growth in technologies companies in Brazil in 2019.
MINING
The mining sector has a huge impact in the development of the southern region in Santa Catarina*. Most of its extraction was initially used to generate energy. Nowadays the mining is being useful for electrical generation, pyrolysis and gasification, coal-chemical industry and use of residual environmental management processes. In the past, it had a negative impact in the environment, nowadays the sector has a Recovery Environmental Plan in effect.
TEXTILE SECTOR
The textile sector in Santa Catarina in recognized worldwide. The state holds 15% of the total number of textile companies in Brazil and it has generated more than 300,000 jobs in Santa Catarina.
